“The only way to learn is through encounters.”
(Martin Buber, I and Thou – Practicing Living Dialogue)
Communication is more than speech. Deaf and hearing-impaired people know this and maximise the richness of their soundless existence. But how can people who rely on ears and voices develop the communication skills that the deaf demonstrate every day? How can we all partake of a dialogue in silence?
Answering that question is the purpose of this exhibition. First, we temporarily remove the ability to perceive sound and then challenge people to communicate. Energetic guides – who know deafness firsthand – teach skills and encourage creativity.
